How to Choose an All Inclusive Resort for Your Honeymoon (10 Tips You Need to Know)

atlanta based honeymoon travel agent

Your honeymoon is not the trip to wing it! It could be one of the most expensive vacations you will ever take, and the resort you choose sets the tone for your entire first trip as a married couple (sometimes even your first trip out of the country ever!) Choosing the wrong one, even a beautiful one, can mean the wrong vibe, the wrong crowd, or a long list of hidden costs that nobody warned you about.

Here is exactly what you need to know before you book.

1. Understand That “All Inclusive” Does Not Mean the Same Thing Everywhere

Before you fall in love with a resort’s photos, make sure you know what is actually included in the rate. At a minimum, most all inclusive resorts cover meals, snacks, non-alcoholic drinks, and basic alcoholic beverages. But premium liquor, specialty restaurants, motorized water sports, spa services, airport transfers, and room service are oftentimes excluded, sometimes at steep prices.

Luxury brands like Sandals, Secrets, and Excellence tend to include more by default. Budget-tier properties do not. Know the difference before you assume.

2. Choose Adults-Only for Your Honeymoon

This one is non-negotiable (IMO) if romance and relaxation are priorities. Family-friendly all inclusive resorts can be wonderful, but they are not designed with honeymooners in mind. You need adults-only.

Adults-only resorts restrict access to guests 18 and older (sometimes 16 and older depending on the property and country), which means quieter pools, more intimate dining, and an atmosphere that actually matches the occasion.

3. Match the Resort’s Vibe to Yours as a Couple

All inclusive resorts have personalities. Some are high-energy with nightly entertainment, beach parties, and swim-up bars packed wall to wall. Others are quiet and secluded with candlelit dinners and butler service.

Neither is wrong. But you need to pick the one that fits how you and your partner actually like to vacation, not just the one with the best photos on Instagram. Ask yourself: do you want to be entertained or left alone? Lively or serene? This is where hiring a travel agent who’s been to the resort can be helpful!

4. Prioritize the Room Category, Not Just the Resort Name

Where you sleep on your honeymoon matters. A junior suite at a five-star resort can still have a garden-view room that looks out at a parking lot. Swim-up suites, ocean-view rooms, private plunge pool suites, and overwater bungalows cost more but they are the difference between a nice trip and an unforgettable one.

When you are researching how to choose an all inclusive resort for your honeymoon, the room category is one of the most important decisions you will make. Do not book the cheapest room at the best resort and expect a true honeymoon experience.

5. Research the Beach and Pool Before You Book

Not every resort marketed as “beachfront” has the beach you are picturing. Some sit on rocky coastlines. Some have beautiful sand but rough surf that makes swimming impossible. Others have calm, clear water but a crowded pool scene that feels more like a theme park than a honeymoon.

Look for recent guest photos, not the resort’s professional photography. Google Maps satellite view is also underrated for checking what the actual beach looks like. Remember that photos of a beach in December can look completely different from June due to weather patterns.

6. Reserve Specialty Restaurants the Moment You Check In (and sometimes before!)

Many all inclusive resorts have one or two buffet-style restaurants open all day, plus several a la carte specialty restaurants for dinner. The a la carte spots require reservations and they fill up fast, especially at peak season.

At some resorts you can reserve before arrival. At others, it is first come, first served at check-in. Either way, make this your first priority when you arrive. Missing out on the best restaurants at your own honeymoon resort is avoidable.

7. Book Through a Travel Advisor, Not a Third-Party Site

This is one of the most common and costly mistakes first-time all inclusive travelers make. Booking through Expedia, Hotels.com, or similar platforms often strips out perks that are available through other channels, including room upgrades, resort credits, complimentary nights, and honeymoon amenity packages.

A travel advisor who specializes in romance travel has direct relationships with resorts and can access offers that are simply not available to the general public. You often end up with more value, not less, even after accounting for any fees.

8. Tip Anyway

All inclusive means your meals and drinks are covered. It does not mean the staff expects nothing. Tipping culture varies by destination, but in Mexico and the Caribbean, cash tips are standard and they directly impact the quality of service you receive throughout your stay.

Bring small bills in the local currency or US dollars. I provide all of my clients with a tipping guide for their destination as there can be differences between countries and resorts.

9. Protect Your Trip with Travel Insurance

Hurricanes, illness, flight cancellations, and resort closures happen. The Caribbean and Mexico, which are home to the most popular all inclusive honeymoon destinations, sit in active hurricane zones. Hurricane season runs from June through November.

Travel insurance, especially a “cancel for any reason” policy, is always worth the piece of mind. The cost is a fraction of what you stand to lose if something goes wrong. Get it when you book, not after.

10. Leave the Resort at Least Once

The point of an all inclusive is convenience, not confinement. If you spend your entire honeymoon inside the resort gates, you will come home having experienced a version of a destination rather than the destination itself.

Book one excursion. Eat one meal at a local restaurant. Walk through one town. The contrast makes the resort feel even better when you return, and you will have a richer, more complete memory of where you actually went.
